RTPI London Football Plate Winners 2018

By Ben Pope

On Friday 22 July, members of Boyer Leverkusen once again took the field to participate in the RTPI 5 a side (London Region Tournament). Stalwarts Luan Deda, Ian Barnett and Lisa Shannon remained while the additions of Ben Pope in goal and Dan Taylor added real optimism that the team could challenge for silverware this year.

Similar to years gone by, the group stages were unkind to Boyer, pairing them with RTPI football heavyweights GVA and Quod alongside a new opposition in the form of DWD.

The first game of the tournament saw Boyer take on Quod in which turned out to be a famous win for Leverkusen. Three goals in 6 minutes from Barnett, Deda and Taylor put Boyer in a commanding lead which the team managed to maintain following defensive organisation from Deda and Pope.

The games came thick and fast for the team with DWD up next. A shocking first 5 minutes to the match ensued resulting in Boyer 3-0 down, many calling for Pope to return between the sticks. The fight back began on 7 minutes with a well taken goal by Barnett followed by a goal mouth scramble, with Taylor bundling home another. The comeback was complete on 14 minutes with a trademark Barnett strike and although Boyer continued to push forward to find a winner the game ended in a draw.

GVA were Boyer’s next opponents, Boyer’s third match in four games. GVA had reached the final on the past three occasions; and it was easy to see why. A well organised and drilled team, GVA made life difficult for Boyer who found themselves 1-0 down inside 5 minutes. This was the way the game ended with a string of smart saves from Pope and defensive blocks from Deda keeping the score at 1-0.

One win, one draw and one loss was only enough for 3rd place in the group for Boyer resulting in them progressing to the knockout stages of the plate competition. Optimism remained high and although disappointed not to enter the trophy competition, the team were determined to bring the plate back to their Southwark based office.

Boyer was drawn against Savills in the quarter finals and the team got off to a flyer with a goal from Barnett, only for Boyer to be pegged back almost immediately. Boyer upped the pressure and goals from Shannon and Deda made it 3-1 with no reply from Savills allowing Boyer to progress to the semi-final.

GL Hearn was Boyer’s opponents in the semi-final and Boyer played out their most convincing game of the tournament. Two well taken goals from Shannon and the trickery of Taylor and Barnett was too much for the GL Hearn defence allowing Boyer finish the game with 5 goals. GL Hearn did earn a consolation goal to Pope’s disappointment, only his 3rd goal conceded in 4 games.

A rematch of Boyer’s first match of the tournament would take the form of the final with members of the Quod team vying for revenge from their previous defeat. The match was tense with many spectators from other teams coming to watch this fascinating encounter. Boyer went 2-0 up early on with goals from Deda and Barnett, only for Quod to reply with a well taken goal that Pope could only get his fingertips to. However, excellent defensive organisation allowed Boyer to see the game out and celebrations ensued. Boyer had won the Plate!

Well done to all teams that participated and congratulations to GVA on winning the trophy.
