Taylor Wimpey 5-a-side Tournament Southampton

On Tuesday 14 May, members of Boyer Leverkusen attended the Taylor Wimpey 5-a-side tournament in Southampton in aid of Naomi House and Abbie’s Army charities. Stalwarts Ian Barnett and Ben Pope remained with new additions of Sean Breslin, Joe Hickling and John-Rhys Davies adding real optimism that the team could challenge for silverware.

Boyer was drawn in a tough group with the likes Barton Wilmore, Dr Groundworks, HSB New Energies, Key Stone and One Way Recruitment. The first game of the tournament saw Boyer start brightly with a 6-0 win against Key Stone with a notable hat trick from Sean Breslin and an exceptional penalty save by Ben Pope. The games came thick and fast for the team, who experienced a mix bag of results throughout the Group Stage but managed to reach knock out stages of The Plate.

Boyer was drawn against Terrey’s Electrical in the Quarter Final. The game started poorly with Boyer conceding an early goal after some questionable defending by Ian Barnett. However, Boyer drew back level with great link up play between John-Rhys Davies and Joe Hickling which led to Ian Barnett coolly slotting home a great team goal. Boyer then pushed forward in search of a winning goal, only to concede a goal against the run of play with just 3 minutes remaining. As the clock ran down Joe Hickling found Ian Barnett in space out wide who went for a long range strike which seemed destined for the top corner only for the keeper to make an astounding save which deflected into the path of Sean Breslin who calmly drew the game level with the last kick of the game. Penalties ensued, which sadly resulted in Boyer being knocked out after Ian Barnett missed his penalty.

We were really pleased to participate in this tournament and thank Taylor Wimpey for a great event and look forward to continuing our working relationship that has stretched back many years.
