London Borough of Sutton’s Industrial Areas – Land and Economy

Boyer's Development Economics team have been instructed by Sutton Council and its regeneration arm, Opportunity Sutton, to analyse three of Sutton’s key industrial locations – Beddington; Kimpton and Imperial Way. Each location has London-wide significance as industrial locations being designated in the London Plan (2015) as Strategic Industrial Locations (SIL). The 3 locations have a combined area of approximately 130ha and are home to over 300 businesses which provide more than 5,000 jobs.

The projects has 2 phases -

  • Phase 1 - To gain a better understanding of how each SIL area operates; effectively what makes them tick and the types of businesses and their activities which makes these locations what they are today. The recommendations of Phase 1 will be used to support industrial land policy within Sutton’s new Local Plan which is due for preferred option consultation in early 2016; and
  • Phase 2 – To develop an Action Plan specific to the Beddington Industrial Area. Beddington, is over 105ha in size where we are currently developing detailed interventions for unlocking the areas redevelopment potential; improving pedestrian and cycle access and car parking provision. A particular focus is around growing the local green and circular economy. Based on this analysis we have identified scope for new employment development of approximately 80,000 sqm equating to over 2,000 new jobs with the potential for new local spend of in excess of £2m per annum.

While the Phase 2 report is not expected to be published until the Spring / Summer 2016 Boyer have already used the interim results to help LB of Sutton win £450k of London Mayor Regeneration Funding to help unlock Beddington’s economic potential.
