Reading Greyhound & Speedway Stadium and Casino

Boyer was commissioned by Stadia UK Ltd and Stanley Casinos Ltd to prepare and submit a revised planning application to Reading Borough Council for the replacement of the Reading Greyhound & Speedway Stadium, incorporating a casino [Destination Racino] with associated car parking and landscaping, from its current position south of Island Road to its immediate north.

The existing stadium site, and adjoining land, is owned by Reading Borough Council and forms part of the Reading Gateway redevelopment proposal. This area of the A33 corridor is home to the Madejski Stadium, the Reading Gate Retail Park and the Green Park and Reading International Business Park.

The proposed alternative site comprised a former landfill site located to the west of the A33 Relief Road, stretching north from Island Road to just south of the River Kennet, and was utilised for go-karting and trail biking.

The principles of retaining the existing stadium use and replacing the facilities were supported by Reading Borough Council, but the introduction of the casino within the proposed building required close liaison and negotiation with the local authority, supported by a Casino Need Assessment coordinated by Boyer.

The project was successfully managed by Boyer, resulting in the granting of planning permission in July 2007, for the provision of modern replacement facilities.
