456 new homes in Broad Oak, Sturry
Led by our Architectural Director Nigel Booen and Associate Director Eva Wilks, Boyer is delighted that our masterplan and detailed design for a mixed use Garden Community on land at Broad Oak Farm in Sturry, Canterbury has received resolution to grant hybrid planning permission from Canterbury City Council.
The site forms the northern half of the Broad Oak-Sturry Strategic Site Allocation (SSA) in the adopted Local Plan for Canterbury City Council and the Committee also granted permission for the southern part of the SSA. The resolution will now contribute towards delivery of the multi-million Sturry Relief Road and will provide extensive green infrastructure, high quality new homes, primary school, commercial and community uses.
Boyer was appointed as Masterplanners and Architects by Barratt David Wilson Homes Kent in 2017 to assist in continued site promotion of the Broad Oak site and progress the masterplan and detailed design work for the hybrid planning application. We worked collaboratively with the masterplanners on the Sturry site and produced a Comprehensive Masterplan Framework Document to drive a joined up approach in delivery and demonstrate that to Canterbury City Council. Thereafter, our role involved producing detailed design proposals for 456 homes and an outline application for the commercial area whilst working collectively with the consultant team integrating access, parking, open space and landscaping. Bringing in our approach of hands-on collaborative design we worked closely with our clients to understand their requirements. Our masterplan aimed at prioritising sustainable and legible movement across the site integrating with the existing landscape infrastructure. The architectural design explored creating residential farmstead groupings inspired by the Kent vernacular and responding to the bio-diversity and landscape network on the site.
