Faces of Boyer: Catherine Pollard

As part of Boyer’s 40th anniversary celebrations, we’re catching up with the people who have helped shape our company culture and deliver great planning. This time, we’re spotlighting Catherine Pollard, Associate Director in our Colchester office.

From Graduate to Associate Director
Catherine joined Boyer back in 2004 as a Graduate Planner. Over the years, she’s risen through the ranks to become an Associate Director, working on a wide range of projects and playing a key role in the Colchester team.
“When I started, I was new to the profession and fresh out of university. The support and mentoring I received at Boyer helped me find my feet quickly, and I’ve been fortunate to grow with the company ever since.”

The Joy of Seeing Projects Come to Life
For Catherine, some of the most rewarding moments have been watching schemes go from paper to real places where people live and work.
“I’ve especially enjoyed working on projects that are now complete and occupied—it’s hugely satisfying to see those places up and running and know you were part of the journey. A few recent planning appeals have also been standout moments, particularly where we've achieved positive outcomes for clients after years of work.”

Why Boyer?
“Boyer is a place where you’re supported and trusted,” Catherine says. “There’s a real team spirit here, especially in the Colchester office. I’ve always felt like my voice is heard, and that’s helped me grow in confidence over time.”
She also highlights the diverse mix of projects—residential, commercial, rural—that keeps things interesting and stretches her professionally.

Planning Then and Now
Having worked in the planning profession for nearly two decades, Catherine has seen a lot change.
“There’s definitely more complexity now, and keeping up with the evolving policy landscape can be challenging. But it’s also what keeps planning dynamic—you’re always learning.”

Words of Wisdom for Aspiring Planners
“My advice? Be open-minded. Planning is such a varied profession and there’s so much to get involved in. Also, don’t underestimate the value of communication—it’s key when dealing with clients, local authorities, and the public. And make sure you have people around you who are willing to support and guide you.”

The Boyer Culture
“I’ve stayed at Boyer because of the people. We support each other, and that makes all the difference. It's a company that believes in developing people, and I’m proud to be part of that.”

Thank you, Catherine, for your continued dedication and the positivity you bring to the team!
