Faces of Boyer: David Hall – From Sky Sports to Strategic Planning

As part of Boyer at 40, we’re shining a light on the people behind our planning expertise. In this edition of Faces of Boyer, we speak with David Hall, Associate Director, who has been part of the team for nearly two decades.

Hi David! When did your journey with Boyer begin?
I joined Boyer in June 2005 as a Principal Planner, having already spent several years in the planning profession. I’ve since progressed to the role of Associate Director.

What changes have you seen over the years – in both your role and the business?
The company has grown significantly in scale, but what’s impressive is that it hasn’t lost its personal touch. Boyer has remained a company that isn’t overly corporate, and that’s important. My role has evolved too – from managing individual projects to having greater responsibility in shaping strategic outcomes.

What’s one moment that stands out for you?
Working on the Stadium application for Luton Borough Council was a standout. It was a public sector scheme that generated a lot of interest—and I even ended up on Sky Sports News as part of the committee presentation. Not your average day in planning!

What makes Boyer special to you?
It’s simple: the people. And the culture we’ve built here—it’s relaxed, discreet, and efficient. There’s no unnecessary pressure, which makes for a more productive and enjoyable working environment.

What’s kept you at Boyer for all these years?
Again, it’s the people, and the relaxed but highly capable culture. You’re trusted to get on with things and given the space to do your best work.

You’ve seen the planning profession evolve—what’s changed most?
Everything! But mostly the level of complexity. Processes have become more convoluted than necessary in many cases, which can be frustrating—but also makes the job more challenging and, at times, more rewarding.

Any advice for someone just starting out in planning?
Absolutely do it! Planning is the best profession. There’s variation in workstreams, plenty of opportunities to specialise in your interests, and you get to work with a huge range of people and communities. It’s a career that offers purpose, variety and people—what more could you want?

And finally, any fun facts or memories to share?
That Sky Sports News appearance will always be a fun one to look back on—it’s not every day you get national coverage as a planner!

Thank you, David!
Your journey with Boyer is a great example of long-term commitment, leadership, and enjoying the ride along the way. Stay tuned as we share more stories from our Faces of Boyer series, celebrating 40 years of people-driven planning.
